Many people consider the eyes to be their most important feature, and for good reason. The eyes brighten the face and help express a wide range of emotions. So, when unfavorable changes begin to appear, such as under-eye ‘bags’, Crow’s Feet, or droopy eyelids, it may be time for a cosmetic intervention. The people of Sonoma, Napa, and Marin County are turning to Santa Rosa’s Plastic Surgery Associates to revitalize the look of tired, aging eyes with an eyelid lift.
The Eyelid Lift of Napa Valley:
The eyelid lift, also known as a blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to refresh the appearance by lifting sagging lids, reducing under-eye circles or ‘bags’, and sculpting the eye contours. A blepharoplasty can even improve the field of vision.
At Plastic Surgery Associates, we meticulously use small, well-hidden incisions during our eyelid lift procedure. These provide a more natural looking blepharoplasty result, and reduce the chance for visible scarring. The blepharoplasty can be tailored to the individual patient’s needs, involving the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, to create a firmer, more youthful appearance.
The Ideal Blepharoplasty Candidate:
Almost any man or woman in good health, and who is unhappy with sagging, puffy tissue along the upper or lower eye may find that an eyelid lift is right for them. The ideal candidate will come into the procedure with a full understanding of the surgical and recovery process, and realistic expectations for their results. While the blepharoplasty can be successful for any skin type or ethnicity, those patients with certain medical disorders or poor tear production may not be recommended for the procedure.
Candidates for the Blepharoplasty may have one or more of the following:
- Tired looking eyes, no matter how well rested
- Drooping upper lids
- Puffy ‘bags’ under the eyes
- Wrinkled lids, making the application of eye makeup difficult
- Vision impairment due to lax tissue
The Eyelid Lift Consultation at Plastic Surgery Associates:
The first step in deciding if an eyelid lift is right for your unique needs will be to schedule a blepharoplasty consultation with Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas. During the initial appointment, the surgeon will fully explain the blepharoplasty procedure, and answer any remaining eyelid lift questions. Before and after photographs of previous blepharoplasty patients will also be shown, allowing candidates a better visualization all of their potential results.
Sometimes a blepharoplasty may not sufficiently meet all of a patient’s aesthetic needs. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas may perform the eyelid lift in conjunction with an additional procedure, such as the facelift or brow lift, to achieve optimum results.
If it is determined that the eyelid lift at Plastic Surgery Associates is right for your situation, a personalized surgical treatment plan will be created. At this time, the exact cost of the eyelid lift will be determined, and your patient coordinator will review the many payment options available at our Santa Rosa office.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure:
The eyelid lift at Plastic Surgery Associates will be performed in one of our in-office surgical suites or at the nearby day surgery center. The procedure will normally take between one and two hours to complete, depending on the extent of correction. Either general anesthesia or a local anesthetic with IV sedation will be used. Both upper and lower lids can be addressed during one surgical procedure, or either can be done individually. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas can also combine an additional technique during the appointment, such as the addition of Botox Cosmetic.
Upper Eyelid Surgery:
The upper eyelid lift is performed to correct sagging lax tissues of the upper eyelid. As we age, the thin skin above the eyes will droop and develop fine lines. This lax skin can make the eyes look tired, unhappy, and uninterested. Eventually, excess tissue of the eyelid can start to impair the vision, as well.
To begin, a very small incision will be made along the inside crease of the upper eyelid. From here, the unwanted fatty tissue and skin will be removed. Loose muscle tissue will be repositioned. Finally, pulling the remaining tissues taut, the skin will be lifted and smoothed around the upper lid. Fine sutures will then be placed for proper healing.
Lower Eyelid Surgery:
The lower lid blepharoplasty was specifically designed to improve the puffy, protruding skin below the eyes. This delicate skin underneath the eye can, over time, slowly lose its elasticity. Eventually, the bulging fat pad can begin to pool away from the face. This tissue is what forms the visible “bags” under the eyes, even when the patient is well-rested.
To begin the lower eye lid lift, Dr. Furnas or Dr. Calanes will make a very small incision along the inner rim of th lower lash line. From here, the surgeon removes the unwanted fat pad, then tightens the remaining skin and muscle. The lower eyelid lift is a wonderful way to refresh the eyes and brighten the appearance.
Recovering from an Eyelid Lift:
Patients can expect their blepharoplasty recovery to take one to two weeks. Bruising and swelling are common after surgery, although these are normally mild. While pain is minimal, a sore or tight feeling across the eyelids is not uncommon. However, these issues will resolve over the first week. If necessary, Dr. Furnas or Dr. Canales will prescribe the needed pain medications for comfortable recovery.
Light daily activities can be resumed three to five days after the eyelid lift. Contact lenses can be worn after the first week. Most patients will be feeling well enough to return to work or school in seven to ten days. Vigorous exercise and heavy lifting should be postponed for three to four weeks.
Potential Risks of a Sonoma County Blepharoplasty:
The eyelid lift at Plastic Surgery Associates is an extremely safe and effective procedure. Each procedure is tailored around the needs of an individual patient. However, as with all surgical procedure, there is a small chance for complications to occur. In rare cases, excessive bleeding, infection, unexpected scarring, dry eyes, and asymmetry may occur. While scarring after a blepharoplasty does occur, great care is taken to hide these within the natural creases of the eyelids.
The best way to avoid any complications following the blepharoplasty will be to choose an experienced and skilled cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Francisco Canales and Dr. Heather Furnas each have over 20 years of experience with rejuvenating eyelid lift procedures.

What is a blepharoplasty from Plastic Surgery Associates?

How long is the usual recovery period, after an eyelid lift?
Most patients can expect their blepharoplasty recovery to take one to two weeks. On average, people will feel well enough to return to work in 7-10 days; and normal activities can be resumed in three to four weeks.
Who is the best candidate for a blepharoplasty?

Are the benefits of an eyelid lift permanent?
Yes, the benefits of an eyelid lift will last for years to come. However, as the forces of gravity and the normal aging process will continue, the results may be altered a small amount over time.
Will my eyelid lift result in scars?
Yes, the blepharoplasty may result in very tiny scars. However, Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas have developed a meticulous eyelid lift lid technique that leaves no visible scarring.
