The Breast Augmentation in Napa Valley:
An augmentation mammoplasty, more commonly referred to as a breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure using saline or silicone implants to restore a full, youthful chest. The procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of small breasts, or a loss of volume due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and the aging process. Asymmetrical breasts, a common problem for many women, can be corrected by using this technique as well. The breast augmentation procedure from Plastic Surgery Associates can restore a woman’s confidence and self-esteem. Dr. Francisco Canales and Dr. Heather Furnas have more than 40 years of combined breast augmentation experience. Their unique techniques will create a natural, feminine silhouette.
The Breast Augmentation Consultation:
The breast augmentation process begins with a consultation appointment at Plastic Surgery Associates. At this time, the surgeon will review medical history and current medications. A physical examination will be performed, and the surgeon will listen carefully to a woman’s aesthetic desires. After a full explanation of the options for breast augmentation, Dr. Furnas or Dr. Canales will show before/after photographs of recent breast augmentation patients. After an honest discussion of the limits and potential complications of a breast augmentation, it will be determined if the surgical procedure is the right choice for the individual patient’s needs. If so, a breast augmentation plan will be created.
The Ideal Candidate for Breast Augmentation:
Almost any woman who is feeling frustrated with how her breasts look may potentially make an excellent candidate for the Plastic Surgery Associates’ breast augmentation procedure. Ideally, the patient will be in good health and hold realistic expectations for her surgical results. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved saline implants for women 18 and older, while silicone is recommended for women 22 or older. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas can assist in determining if breast implants are the right choice for an individual patient.
Determining the Right Size Implant:
Prior to the breast augmentation procedure, there are several ways to get an accurate idea of how your implants will look. During the consultation appointment with Dr. Furnas or Dr. Canales, breast implant sizers will be available. Worn under a thin t-shirt, with an unpadded bra, sizers can show how a certain implant type or volume will look on your body. Additionally, to get an idea of implant sizing, women can also use Dr. Furnas’ at-home Rice Test. Fill a pair of knee-high panty hose (or cut up an old pair) with some uncooked rice, and place this inside of your bra. These homemade ‘sizers’ can be worn under several different outfits to see what size looks the best.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure:
Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas perform the breast augmentation procedure in their personal, accredited surgical suite; under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Normally, the procedure will take less than one hour to complete. As an outpatient procedure, patients are able to go home the same afternoon. Breast augmentation at Plastic Surgery Associates can be performed using a variety of different breast implants, making every surgery custom tailored to the patient. Implants come in different volumes (known as CCs), shapes, and profiles. Implants can be positioned over or under the pectoralis muscles, depending on the amount of natural breast tissue present. To begin the breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas will create an incision around the areola (periareolar), along the breast crease (inframammary), or under the armpit (axillary). From here, the implants will be placed in the breast. Silicone implants require a larger incision, as they are placed already filled. Saline implants are filled once they are properly placed in the breast. Dissolvable sutures are then used along the incisions.
Breast Augmentation Rapid Recovery:
To ensure a shorter recovery period, Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas have developed their own, innovative breast augmentation techniques. These include a meticulous breast pocket creation and a highly trained operating room staff. These eliminate rough surgical techniques, meaning a less painful recovery. Additionally, the anesthesia used during breast augmentation is carefully tailored to the patient, also shortening the recovery period. With rapid recovery, most patients are off prescription pain medications in as few as three days. Strenuous exercise and the lifting of heavy objects should be postponed for two to three weeks. Most women are ready to return to work in about four days. A support garment or surgical bra will need to be worn in the weeks following a breast augmentation. This will allow the implants to properly settle into the implant pocket. Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas will let patients know when they can resume wearing an underwire bra. The Importance of Massage After a Breast Augmentation:
Massage following the placement of breast implants can be vital for proper healing, and to obtain natural-looking results. Performed routinely over the first twelve post-op months, massage can assist the implants to move to the desired location, keep the breasts soft, and help reduce scar tissue formation. Dr. Furnas and Dr. Canales will discuss the need for breast massage during the consultation appointment. You should perform the breast massage:
- Immediately after your breast augmentation
- Three times a day for the first three months, post-op
- After three months, if the breast feels soft, twice a day
- Once daily from four months to twelve months post-op
Potential Breast Augmentation Risks and Complications:
Breast augmentation is considered a safe procedure, with little risk. As it is a surgical procedure, there is unfortunately a small chance for complications to arise. These can include excessive bleeding, delayed wound healing, infection, loss of nipple sensation, and asymmetry. A woman’s best defense against any complications is to choose a reputable, experienced cosmetic surgeon. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas are both Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Their extensive background in breast enhancement will significantly decrease the chance for complications to occur.
Breast Implant Exchange and Revision
It is important to understand that while breast implants do not have an expiration date, they are not intended to last forever. While many women can still have fabulous looking breasts with implants that are eight to ten years old, there will more than likely come a time when the implants will need to be replaced. The most common reason for implant replacement is a desired change in the physical appearance. Less often, implant revision will need to be performed to correct problems such as rippling/wrinkling, capsular contraction (scarring), rupture, and implant displacement.
