While sweat is part of everyday life, some of people can experience underarm wetness and odor more than others. Men and women suffering from hyperhidrosis, or excess sweating, are often forced to constantly reapply expensive deodorants and antiperspirant products throughout the day; sometimes they even need to frequently change shirts. However, even with these methods, staying in control of the frustrating sweat and odor can prove difficult. To solve the problems associated with axillary hyperhidrosis, Plastic Surgery Associates’ Dr. Francisco Canales and Dr. Heather Furnas now offer a noninvasive way to reduce embarrassing underarm sweat without surgery: miraDry®.
MiraDry® at Plastic Surgery Associates
MiraDry® is an innovative solution for patients unhappy with excessive sweating and underarm odor. Axillary hyperhidrosis can cause frustration and embarrassment for men and women at almost any age. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration, miraDry® uses concentrated energy waves, applied just below the skin’s surface, to shrink and destroy sweat glands, which do not return.
Safe for the surrounding healthy tissues, each miraDry® treatment addresses approximately 5% of the body’s more than 2 million sweat glands. This means that the body still has the ability to eliminate toxins and cool itself down naturally by sweating, as needed, only without the embarrassing armpit odor and dampness. After a single treatment, most patients will see up to an 80% reduction in underarm sweat and odor.
The miraDry® Consultation in Santa Rosa
Anyone unhappy with underarm sweat, wetness, and odor is encouraged to schedule a one-on-one consultation at the Plastic Surgery Associates’ Santa Rosa or Novato office. At this time, we will review the medical history and perform a brief physical evaluation. Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas will also take time to discuss patient’s short-term and long-term goals for sweat reduction. After explaining the miraDry® treatment option, Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas will determine if miraDry® is right for an individual’s unique situation. If so, a custom-tailored miraDry® treatment plan will be created.
The Ideal Candidate for miraDry®
The ideal candidate for miraDry® will be between 18 and 65 years old, uncomfortable with excessive underarm sweat and odor. Potential patients should be in overall good health, fully understand the miraDry® treatment process, and hold realistic expectations for their final results. Patients with heart or liver disease should not opt for miraDry®. Those with skin color type 5 or 6 may also be encouraged to avoid miraDry®. Prior to scheduling a miraDry® appointment, a consultation will be arranged with one of our nurse practitioners or physicians. At this time, it will be determined if miraDry® is the right treatment for an individual situation.
The miraDry® Procedure
Each miraDry® treatment is performed in one of Plastic Surgery Associates’ private treatment rooms. For maximum patient comfort, a topical or local anesthetic will be applied prior to treatment. Once the target area has been determined, the provider will gently move the miraDry® applicator across the axillary tissue. A pulse of laser energy waves will travel several millimeters under the skin’s surface, damaging targeted sweat glands. Depending on the extent of correction needed, each miraDry® treatment normally takes less than an hour to perform
Recovery and Results of miraDry®
MiraDry® does not require any incisions, therefore there is little downtime necessary. Most patients are back to their normal work or school schedule the same day. While some tenderness may be noticeable for the first several days, most patients are comfortable using over-the-counter pain medications. In one to two days, the underarm area will be completely healed.
The results from miraDry® can be seen immediately. Patients will notice a reduction in sweat right away. In most instances, only one miraDry® treatment is needed for long-term results. Some patients may notice the bonus of less armpit hair, following their miraDry® treatment, as well.
Risks from miraDry®
MiraDry® is approved by the FDA as a safe and effective method for significantly improving underarm hyperhidrosis. The treatment holds little chance for complications, although common side-effects include redness, tenderness, and mild swelling. These normally resolve over the first one to two days. Most patients are comfortable with over-the-counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen, and an ice-pack for swelling.
