The Laser Hair Reduction You Need
Most people love the smooth, silky result of shaving. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long – and it often brings along irritation, ingrown hairs, and other painful nuisances. Other popular hair removal techniques, such as chemical depilatories and waxing, last a little longer. But they’re not suitable for people with sensitive skin or allergies, and, like shaving, they must be repeated at regular intervals to maintain results. Many people live with the belief that unwanted body and facial hair are simply an annoying part of life – until they undergo laser hair reduction.
Lasers are an effective, popular method that we use to reduce unwanted body hair at our office in Santa Rosa. Those interested in laser hair removal most commonly treat areas such as the face, legs, arms, bikini area, and back. We use the LightSheer™ system from Lumenis® for laser hair reduction. This device, like other laser hair reduction machines, targets hairs with exceptional precision, making them especially useful for smaller areas including the upper lip and sideburns. But because each laser pulse lasts only a fraction of a second, this method can also tackle larger areas of hair in a relatively short time.
Laser hair reduction works by using a short, intense pulse of light, delivered through a handpiece. When one of these pulses is delivered to a hair, the pigment in the hair’s follicle absorbs the light, destroying the hair and damaging the follicle. In most cases, hair will never regrow from these damaged follicles. When laser hair reduction is performed by the trained professionals at Plastic Surgery Associates, the surrounding skin remains unaffected.

Laser Hair Reduction at a Glance
|Purpose:||To reduce the amount of unwanted hair on a specific area of the body.|
|Procedure:||Before beginning the laser hair reduction procedure, the provider performing the treatment will trim the targeted hair. He or she will then adjust the settings on the machine to account for the hair’s texture, location, and color, as well as your skin tone. You and the provider may need to wear eye protection during the treatment. The treatment may last between several minutes and more than 1 hour, depending on the amount of hair to be addressed. Many patients report that discomfort is manageable, but topical anesthetic is available if needed.
Following the procedure, you may be provided with an ice pack or soothing cream to reduce discomfort. You’ll also be asked to schedule your next treatment. Most patients achieve their desired results after 4 to 6 treatments.
|Recovery:||Side effects are uncommon, but swelling and redness at the treatment site may occur. These symptoms typically resolve themselves after a couple of hours. Most people are able to return to their normal activities immediately.|
|Results:||Laser hair reduction patients will notice an immediate reduction in the amount of hair at the treatment site. The amount of unwanted hair will continue to diminish with each subsequent treatment.|
