Dr. Furnas’ Background
In 1990, Dr. Furnas was appointed to the plastic surgery faculty at Harvard Medical School and served on the staff at the Beth Israel Hospital. Shortly thereafter, she relocated to California and co-founded Plastic Surgery Associates with her husband, Dr. Francisco Canales. Since that time, she has earned a reputation as a skilled and caring plastic surgeon in the local community and beyond.
Dr. Furnas serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University, where she enjoys working with the plastic surgery residents. She lectures internationally and publishes in leading plastic surgery journals on topics including Vaginal Rejuvenation. She was awarded the prestigious ASAPS Tiffany award in 2017 for Best Scientific Paper on “Why Women Choose Labiaplasty.” She also served as a guest editor for the specialty’s most prestigious and widely read journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, for a series of articles on Women in Plastic Surgery. The series received a national journalism Ozzie Honorable Mention Award in 2017.
Dr. Furnas is an associate editor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and she holds leadership positions in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). She is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, for which is a member of the Advisory Council for Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Furnas has taken her technical skills abroad to serve the needs of children with birth defects in Peru, Honduras, Western Samoa, the Philippines, and El Salvador. Her volunteer efforts were inspired after spending a year in Kenya with her father, a world-renowned plastic surgeon who also volunteered with the East African Flying Doctors.
A true artist at heart, Dr. Furnas has a passion for theatre, books, art museums, and writing. She is an artist herself, and much of her work can be found on display at the practice. But her greatest joy is spending time with her family.
