Up to 90% of all women will experience at least one unsightly area of cellulite during their lifetime. Unfortunately, exercise and diet are rarely helpful to ride the body of this stubborn, lumpy tissue. Until recently, the only way to restore smooth, taut skin was through a surgical procedure, such as liposuction. However, not everyone is ready to commit to the cost, discomfort, and lengthy recovery associated with an invasive procedure.
Plastic Surgery Associates now offers patients in Santa Rosa a noninvasive treatment to rid the body of stubborn fatty areas: CoolSculpting. This innovative treatment is designed to reduce isolated cellulite without the need for any incisions or sutures. Patients can see up to a 20% reduction in fatty tissue after just one, in-office, CoolSculpting procedure.
CoolSculpting Can Improve the:
- Abdomen (Muffin Top)
- Upper Abdomen
- Lower Abdomen
- Flanks (Love Handles
- Upper Back
CoolSculpting in Napa and Sonoma Valley:
CoolSculpting utilizes the theory of Cryolipolysis, a process using extremely cold temperatures to freeze targeted layers of fat cells. This fatty tissue will slowly perish, safely absorbed and removed by the body. During the treatment, healthy tissues will remain unaffected. Patients can expect to see a 20-25% reduction in fatty tissue after their CoolSculpting treatment. The procedure is completely safe, meaning a second procedure can be performed for additional body sculpting results.
At Plastic Surgery Associates, three different CoolSculpting applicators are available; each designed to treat a unique area of fatty tissue. Fat elimination can be effective seen on the thighs, abdomen, flanks, lover back, upper back, and even arms. Additionally, Plastic Surgery Associates offers the CoolSmooth PRO. This streamlined applicator was created to target hard, “unprintable” fatty tissue, such as that of the outer thighs.
Your CoolSculpting Consultation:
Prior to scheduling your CoolSculpting treatment, a consultation will be arranged with Dr. Furnas or Dr. Canales. This appointment gives both the surgeon and patient time to get to know one another, and establish long-term, aesthetic goals. After the physical evaluation is performed, Dr. Canales or Dr. Furnas will explain the CoolSculpting procedure in full. They will discuss the benefits and limitations of the treatment, and show Before/After photographs of their recent CoolScultping patients. This will assist you in visualization of potential CoolSculpting results. If it is decided that CoolSculpting is right for you, a personalized treatment plan will be created. At this appointment, the exact cost of CoolSculpting will be determined, as well.
The Ideal Candidate for CoolSculpting:
CoolSculpting can benefit almost anyone who is struggling with isolated areas of fatty tissue along the arms, legs, or trunk. The ideal candidate will have stubborn areas of fat, that are resistant to diet and exercise. Potential patients should be in overall good health, understand the CoolSculpting treatment process, and have reasonable expectations for their final results. The procedure is safe for all skin types and ethnicities.
Prospective patients should remember that CoolSculpting is not a substitute for weight loss; nor is it a solution for obesity. During the complimentary CoolSculpting consultation, Dr. Canales and Dr. Furnas will help to decide if the noninvasive fat elimination treatment is right for your situation.
The CoolSculpting Procedure:
All CoolSculpting treatments are performed in one of Plastic Surgery Associates’ comfortable procedure rooms. To begin, the targeted area will be determined. Next, the two CoolSculpting paddles are placed on either side of the treatment location. Using light suction, the applicators gently pull the tissue upward. Finally, the CoolSculpting paddles will slowly begin to chill the tissue, staying in place for 60 minutes.
The CoolSculpting treatment is not considered painful, so there is no need for anesthesia. An intense cool, and mild pulling sensation will occur as the procedure begins; but this will only be felt for a few minutes. Patients are comfortable enough to read, talk on the phone, surf the Internet, or even relax with a short nap during their CoolSculpting treatment.
To make your CoolSculpting experience more efficient and effective, Plastic Surgery Associates offers DualSculpting. With two CoolSculpting machines, it is now possible to treat two areas during one, hour-long session. Unique in Napa Valley, Plastic Surgery Associates’ DualSculpting means both love handles, upper arms, or thighs can be treated at the same time.
The Recovery after CoolSculpting in Santa Rosa:
Patients should expect no downtime after a CoolSculpting treatment. Once the hour-long procedure has finished, normal activities can be resumed. This includes work, school, and even exercise. There may be mild redness, swelling, or bruising along the treated area, but if these occur, they will resolve over the following several weeks. Itching and tenderness are not uncommon, but last for only one to two days.
As it will take between two and four months for the body to completely absorbed the discarded fat cells, the final results from a CoolSculpting treatment are not immediately noticeable. In about 16 weeks, the full benefits of a CoolSculpting treatment can be appreciated. Most patients note a 20% reduction in fatty tissue. If further improvement is desired in the area, a repeat CoolScultping procedure can be safely performed.
Since the CoolSculpting procedure is noninvasive, not requiring any incisions or sutures, there is little risk for complications to occur. The healthy, surrounding tissue remains unaffected during the CoolSculpting treatment.
The benefits of CoolSculpting are long-lasting, as fat cells will not regrow. It is possible, however, that the surrounding fat cells will continue to expand. For this reason, patients are encouraged to follow a healthy diet and routine exercise plan to maintain their new body contours.

What is CoolSculpting?
Plastic Surgery Associates’ CoolSculpting is a noninvasive procedure designed to rid the body of isolated fatty deposits. CoolSculpting uses a process called Cryolipolysis (concentrated cold temperatures) to destroy targeted fat cells.
How does CoolScultping work?
The CoolSculpting applicators deliver extreme cold temperatures to the target tissues. This chill will essentially freeze the fat cells, causing them to die. Over the following several weeks, the fat cells will be absorbed by the body, improving the appearance of the treatment area.
Where is Plastic Surgery Associates’ CoolScultping treatment performed?
All CoolSculpting procedures are performed in one of Plastic Surgery Associates’ relaxing treatment rooms, in our Santa Rosa office.
What areas will benefit from CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting can reduce cellulite and stubborn fat deposits along the thighs, abdomen, flanks, lower back, and upper arms.
How long does a CoolSculpting treatment take?
CoolSculpting will take one hour per treatment area. During the comfortable procedure, patients are encouraged to read, surf the Internet, or nap.
What are the risks of a CoolSculpting procedure?
At Plastic Surgery Associates, the CoolSculpting procedure is considered both safe and effective. Since the treatment is noninvasive, not requiring any incisions, there is little chance for infection or bleeding. Mild redness, bruising, and tenderness may be experienced initially, but these will quickly fade.
CoolSculpting at a Glance
|Purpose||To reduce isolated areas of stubborn fatty tissue.|
|Procedure:||CoolSculpting begins with a protective gel pad placed along the treatment area. The target area is then vacuumed upward, between the two panels, and slowly cooled. A mild, cooling sensation is felt as the CoolSculpting machine freezes the unwanted fat. Similar to an icepack, the sensation is easily tolerated by most patients. The panels are left in place for about 1 hour. DualSculpting is also available, treating two separate areas during one CoolSculpting session.|
|Recovery:||No downtime is needed. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately. Work, school, and exercise can be resumed the same afternoon.|
|Results:||Patients will see up to a 20% reduction in fatty tissue in the treatment zone. A second procedure can safely be performed, should additional fat elimination be desired.|
